Text Box: The inaugural meeting of Scioto Lodge #6 F. & A. M. November 21, 1805 was followed by growth that found a number of prominent Chillicothe residents among its ranks. During the year of 1806 the meetings, however brief, afforded Freemasonry a solid foundation in Ross County because virtually every meeting focused on petitions being read, voted upon and degree work performed. Degree work in the Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft degree made up much of the business at hand during the early months of 1806. In 1806 lodge meetings were held monthly without exception. The By-Law were read and signed at a meeting on Wednesday, March 19, 1806. It was the custom that every member of the fraternity sign off on the By-Laws of the then Scioto Lodge #2 F. & A.M. when they were elected to receive the degrees of Masonry.
In June of 1806 the brethren partook of entertainment provided on the occasion by Mr. Meeker at which time a number of toast were drank appropriate to the day accompanied with sentiments and songs.
At the meeting held on December 3, 1806 it was duly noted that the By-Laws of Scioto Lodge #2 F. & A.M. required that on the preceding regular Lodge night of the festival of St. John the officers of this Lodge shall be elected. At this same meeting it was officially determined that Brother Lewis Cass be requested to deliver an oration to the brethren and visitors of this Lodge on the Festival of St. John the Evangelist on December 27, 1806. A committee was appointed to make the arrangements of that day which was agreed to and Brother Henry Massie and Jeremiah McLane were appointed by the Worshipful Master to that duty and to report to the Lodge on the Saturday, December 20, 1806 preceding the Festival of St. John.
In the minutes of December 20, 1806 the committee appointed for the purpose of making the arrangements reported that their duty had been duly performed. Members and visiting brethren would on that day, after the oration, would dine together at the home of Mr. Meeker.
On December 27, 1806 the brethren formed in procession and walked to the house of Mr. Forrest Meeker where, after taking refreshments, proceeded to the State House in due order. Brother Lewis Cass delivered an oration to the brethren and numerous others in the audience which was received with every mark of attention and applause. The brethren then returned to the house of William L. Meeker and partook of an elegant entertainment provided on the occasion where a number of toast, sentiments and songs were given appropriate to the day. (As transcribe from actual minutes)
